How much omega 3 per day?
Omega-3 fatty acids have currently gained a lot of attention due to the wide number of health benefits. Research has proposed that the best way to replenish your omega requirements is to eat fish two times in a week but if you don’t want to eat fish, then you need to consider taking omega supplements like omega blend.
Before purchasing any supplements, you need to make sure that it contains the adequate amount to EPA and DHA. Besides supplements, you can also obtain omega-three fatty acids from other foods like seeds flax seeds and nuts like walnuts. These foods contain ALA, which can be converted into DHA and EPA.
So, the question, How much omega 3 per day? It isn't easy to answer because different studies have proposed different guidelines for omegas.
Omega 3 fatty acids recommended dosage guidelines
Various health organizations have shared different dosage guidelines for taking omegas. But most of the organizations recommended minimum dosage of approximately 250 to 500 mg for healthy adults, containing EPA and DHA mixture. However, certain cases can exist in which a higher amount of omega will be required.
For adults’ females and males
Studies have also shown that different people can require a diverse number of omegas for various health conditions. Evidence recommends that ALA daily dosage is 1.6 grams for men and 1.1 grams for women. While some other researchers suggest that for males and females, the adequate daily intake of omegas must be around 0.25 grams of EPA along with DHA.
However, according to the national institute of health reports, no enough data is available to authorize omegas' daily dosage authentically. On top of that, no particular authentic recommendations by NIH for omegas are currently known.
Omegas dosage for children pregnant and breast-feeding mothers.
Studies recommend that every pregnant or lactating mother should add more omegas to their diet as follows;
“0.3 g of EPA plus DHA, of which at least 0.2 g should be DHA
1.4 g of ALA while pregnant
1.3 g of ALA while lactating”
The FDA has suggested pregnant, lactating mothers and children should include fish in their diet in a week. According to research, for pregnant or breastfeeding mothers, “8 to 12 ounces of low mercury” are recommended every week to promote fetal development. Infants from 1st month to 1st year must consume 0.5 g of total omegas. The remaining requirement of omegas will be fulfilled by breast milk containing DHA and EPA. However, no absolute rule has been made about a person's daily omega needs, and available studies about omega dosage are also less.
